We say more than we mean. The sound of language has a life of its own.

Language is regarded by Alma as a flow of differently sized units. Several layers of these units are analysed. Which particles are finally used depends on the way of speaking as much as the position of the microphone and the parameters of the analysis.

The sound units are regarded as sound material, which is played back in different modes. For example: - small particles appear as a wave that breaks and then wanes. - a group of sounds become a new word. - a few sounds serve as support for a varying rhythm. - a sound is being stretched and musicalized so it appears like a speaking bell.

Alma is not a piece, but an instrument. It can be used for improvisation and composition.

Here is a documentation of the software side: How to play with Alma
