Bizarre Places

The basic idea for this piece are events which are displaced. Or places which are not in an organic way connected to the events they carry.

This is the bizarre, so well-known, really.

But perhaps the music does not care. Perhaps for its events a place is just a place, and the tension, and silence, which arises between them, becomes a part of the music.

It comes in a number of models / figures / forms. Variations derive, connections, and different emenations, depending on duration, or instrument, or electronic sound.

Or as a syllable of text, spoken by the percussionist, which add to the first verse of a poem of Gennady Gor, written during the blockade of Leningrad 1942:

Der Fluss bekam Schmerzen im Arm
Und weh tat ihm das Herz.
So sang der nackte Fluss
Von allem was ihn schmerzt.
[...]
Und Wasser über Wasser steigen,
Und Steine mit Steinen schweigen.
Zwei Ufer sich zusammendrängen
Um einzuzwängen die Oka.

The river got pain in its arm
And its heart was hurting it.
So the naked river sang
About all which was its pain.
[...]
And water goes over water,
And stones say nothing with stones.
Two banks huddle together
To wedge Oka.
