συμβολον, το [συμβαλλω] token to certify and recognize hospitality (tessera hospitalis), a piece broken from an object (e.g. a ring, dice, pad, etc) which fits the other pieces so they can be held together (συμβαλλειν [...]). Such tokens were inherited to children. From this, figuratively, an agreed-upon sign of something; generally mark, emblem, indication, signal, feature; figuratively evidence.
